New Year’s Resolutions = RESOLVE TO DO BETTER!

New Year’s Resolutions = RESOLVE TO DO BETTER!

My goal for 2016 is to accomplish the goals of 2015, which I should have done in 2014,
because I promised them in 2013 and planned them in 2012.”   – Anonymous

New Year’s Resolutions are supposed to be things that we RESOLVE TO DO BETTER! This means typically changing habits….and boy are those things hard to change! The quote at the top is funny because most of us identify with it and have had the same resolutions several years running!

Research into the brain shows that we are more comfortable doing things that don’t work than doing new things that do! That means that in order for us to change behaviors, we have to do several things to improve our chances of achieving those goals. Research shows chances of succeeding increase when you have:

  1. Written goals aligned with benefits of accomplishing them
  2. A clear list of the steps that are needed to achieve the goals
  3. Actions that will be taken weekly to make those steps happen
  4. An accountability system to reinforce them and help you stay on task

Denis Waitley, motivational speaker and writer summarizes this in his quote:

“The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever   seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.”
