When my husband became ill, I went through a medical crisis and a financial crisis and decided I never wanted to face two at the same time again. For me, I want a balance between stress reducing things (eating out when nobody will cook, no credit card balances) and safety (money in the bank so if something goes wrong, I don't worry about losing the house) I like nice things and experiences but....I hate stress and fear worse. Money buys me safety and less stress.

How about teaming up with another couple to cook and share dinner at home with wine, candlelight, and wonderful company?

Or, if you're on a healty food kick and he loves Popeye's fried chicken, why not bring home that Popeye chicken dinner. What better way to say "I love you." One night won't hurt the healthy side -- everything in moderation.

It seems like it's easier to spend money than it is to be thoughtful when trying to communicate your feelings for someone. It's especially easier to spend money when you've waited until the last minute. So listening, knowing the other person and planning ahead are all things that can help you save money. Also, don't get sucked into the trap created by retail marketeers around a holiday. I'm sure your honey bunny would love candy, flowers, a card and a diamond necklace (retail value $350), but maybe that scarf (MSRP $35) she pointed out to you last week that you noticed matched her eyes (priceless) would convey the sentiment even better for a tenth of the cost.
